Decorative Hardware for Kitchen Cabinetry

It’s all in the detail when it comes to kitchen cabinetry

Kitchens are one of the most widely used rooms in the home and so your kitchen furniture must be designed to meet your needs and fit in with your lifestyle.

You’ve picked your appliances, you’ve picked your worktops, splashback and cabinet doors. You’ve chosen a new sink and taps. The kitchen refresh is really coming together.  The final hurdle is looking at the decorative hardware.

Decorative hardware for kitchen cabinetry comes in a variety of types, sizes, styles, materials and finishes and are essential features of kitchen furniture, having both a decorative and functional role.

Cabinet handles and pulls are often chosen purely for their visual appeal alone, without bearing in mind their functionality or, crucially, whether they really match the rest of the kitchen.

As a result, they can end up being uncomfortable to use or simply not complementing the kitchen aesthetic you were striving for.

The Simple Rules…

When planning the detail, it’s good to consider best practice about what goes where – the general rule of thumb is pretty simple, put knobs on your cabinet doors and pulls on your drawers!

Finding the right decorative hardware is of course, a matter of opinion and the most important choice is the one that feels right for you, but there are some useful considerations. For example, one elongated handle fitted centrally on a drawer means you can open it one handed, glider fittings on cabinets helps with this too – and two knobs does usually mean that two hands are required (think of that tricky chest of drawers in your bedroom).

The ever-popular trend of dark blue and green kitchens offers up exciting possibilities for lighter decorative hardware – think bold brass, copper and oversized. Rules of course, are made to be broken and as we see below, shell pulls have been used on the worktop level drawers, but the deep drawers below have the same knob as the eye level cupboards.  The same knobs have been cleverly used at the end of the units to hang tea towels or oven mitts.

Black decorative hardware is still hot in terms of colour trends for 2022. You can really update your look by matching your black cabinet handles to a new black sink or tap.

If going for black, we would recommend opting for a matte finish and keeping it simple and understated as whatever style you choose, black does catch the eye, especially in a light kitchen. We have used the same pull for both cupboards and drawers to keep the minimalist feel of the kitchen below.

The traditional colours of antique brass, golds and bronzes are having a resurgence adding warmth and depth to the overall look.  These looks are stunning paired with our earthy worktops such as Bianco Modena and Terra di Siena.

A stylist trick is using the same decorative hardware but changing the sizes as you can see in the kitchen below. The chrome handles pop on the sumptuous dark green colour and contrast beautifully with our white worktops.

If you are not replacing your cabinet doors, but opting for just a decorative hardware refresh, the position of the original holes will impact the new hardware choice.
