With so much choice on offer, and so many wonderful trends to choose from, where do you start when it comes to creating that new look you’ve always dreamed of?
There are fewer greater joys in life than transforming your kitchen into something truly special. As the heart of your home in so many ways, making sure your kitchen is a place you love to spend time in has a huge affect on how you feel about almost every other room, too. From this space will spread all the positive feelings you want the in rest of your house and, as we all know, a happy home means a happy life!
However, even with the ease and convenience offered by our unique products here at Granite & TREND Transformations, renovating your kitchen is a big job and it’s one you want to get just right. You don’t want to settle for anything less than perfection, and that all starts with making the right design choices.
Choosing your colour scheme may be one of the most complicated and far-ranging decisions you’re going to have to make. Are you going for a classic look, or something more contemporary? Will you opt for minimalist colours, or go for some eye-catching colour pairings? How exactly do you make that wonderful new look you have in mind a reality?
Here are some of our top tips on how to make this most important of choices:
- Start with your worktops
There will likely be 3 or 4 distinct colours that you need to choose: your cupboards, your walls and/or tiling, and your worktops. A lot of people tend to think about paint colours for walls and cabinets first, but we strongly advise you actually start with your worktops, instead.
By settling for paint or cabinet colours first, you’re in danger of limiting your worktop choices to only those which match that one choice. With so many varieties of worktop on offer, why would you want to do that? There is such a huge range of colours, finishes, and patterning on offer, you’ll definitely want to get this nailed first.
Worktops are the defining surface in your kitchen and can have the most impact on how the space eventually looks and feels. Once you have these cornerstones of design in place, only then should you start building on that theme by selecting your cupboard, tile and wall colours.
- Make sure you see how the colours looks in situ
Keeping a scrap book or collecting samples, either in real life or online, is a great way to check out different colours, but remember that how they look on the page or on the screen is not necessarily how they will look in your kitchen.
For a start, the lighting in your kitchen is completely unique, so it is a good idea to try out samples under that light before deciding. Even different positions will give different effects, so you should try these colours in the actual positions they will be in too. For worktops, make sure you place the samples flat on your current surfaces in several different locations. Likewise with walls and cupboards, make sure you view the samples flat against the vertical surface so you can see exactly how the light and shade changes your view of the colour.
Of course, there are only so many samples you can lug around, and you want realistic versions of the final product, ideally, not just prints. We can help with that: our design consultants are more than happy to bring a range of real samples of the exact material you will end up with so you can see how it works properly. It’s all part of our free, no obligation, home consultation service!
- Consult with an expert
As well as our home consultation service, we have showrooms all around the UK where you can see some different setups and start exploring colours. Every showroom has its own team of experts who are more than happy to talk to you about your design ideas and suggest a few of their own.
Whether you’ve already got a solid idea of what you want, or really don’t know where to start, they live and breath kitchen design, and love a challenge! If you can’t make it in person to a showroom, or are just not sure how we can help, you can also schedule a call back from one of our team to talk through it.
- Be bold and don’t be afraid to break the rules!
There are plenty of trends and ideas out there for you to look at, but don’t forget that, at the end of the day, this is your kitchen and how it looks is entirely up to you! There may be classic colour combos that always work, but really your kitchen should be as unique as you, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Our wide range of styles mean you can totally customise a new look that works for you. Just make sure you check the colours out properly in your home first!
